Kid Theodore @ The Alphabet Lounge

One of the bands whose set I was most excited to see at CMJ last year was Kid Theodore‘s. True, I had hardly heard any of their music, but what I had heard, I liked. The reason I really wanted to see them was their story… How many bands do you hear that come from Utah these days? More importantly, how many of them do you hear getting radio play because they decided to show up and perform in the station’s parking lot unnanounced?

So, yeah, I knew I was going to like these guys right off the bat.

Happy New Year!

I know I’ve not been the most up-to-date with this website. That happens during the holidays. Have no fear, though… I’m working on some photos to post right now and have a few other things brewing. Keep an eye out.

In the meantime, here’s something awesome you may want to check out. Fiction Family is the new project from Jon Foreman and Sean Watkins (formerly of Nickel Creek). They’ve got an album coming out towards the end of the month and are going out on tour right now. Here’s the video of their first single. Enjoy!

Take Away Shows

It’s recently come to my attention that there are people who still don’t know about these yet, so I’m going to take a break from the regular schedule of photography and use this as a sort of PSA for the Take Away Shows. There’s this guy in France, see, who goes by the name of Vincent Moon and likes to make short films of bands he likes performing acoustically in unconventional spaces. He got Vampire Weekend on the street and in bars. Jose Gonzalez played in the back of a moving truck. Sufjan Stevens performed for him on the top of what looks like a church. Efterklang – yes, all of them – played a few songs in a stairwell. Recently, he even surprised Bloc Party at a bar and convinced them to sing a few songs in the street.

Although infrequently updated, the music there is very, very (tre, tre?) cool and never quite what you’d expect. You may even find something that you like and never heard about before. Head over there and check it out.

Barack Obama = EPIC WIN!!!

November 4, 2008. I think everyone in the country woke up Tuesday morning and said to themselves, “Something’s gotta give.” Eight years after George W. Bush was elected president, people knew it was time for a change, but spent the day anxious and hopeful.

I didn’t have much doubt in my mind as to who was going to win the presidency. I put some Cava in the fridge to celebrate with and spent the day out and about. I was planning on coming home late – I had things to do – and watching the returns for however long it would take. Some of the swing states, I figured, would be close, and I expected some protracted agony like we had in the last couple of elections. On my way home that night, I was listening to the BBC as they talked about how they were just waiting to officially call Virginia for Obama and how emails were coming in from all over the world “comparing an Obama Presidency to the fall of the Berlin Wall.”

At 11 o’clock pm eastern time, I stepped off the bus, and people started running out of their apartment buildings screaming, “Obama!!! Obama is President!!!” People were honking their horns and yelling up and down my street in Harlem. It was awesome.

So I ran home to see if it was true. My roommates tried to trick me by saying McCain won and putting on Fox News. I told them to stop it, there were hugs all around, and then champagne.Â A little after watching John McCain’s concession speech, I got a call from a friend working for the Obama campaign in western Pennsylvania who told me there was a huge rally down on 125th Street. My roommates and I just looked at each other, set the DVR for Obama’s speech, and rushed downtown… thankfully with cameras in hand.
