One of the best parts of the Whiteaker Block Party had to be all of the music, all day long, absolutely for free. Since I’m an architecture student, they don’t let me out much, so I don’t see (or photograph) a lot of shows anymore. This was one opportunity I was not going to miss, especially when one of the bands was Adventure Galley, one of the most talked-about Eugene bands and winner of last year’s Myspace Rock the Space Contest. I’ve got to say that these guys are the best local band I’ve seen so far. They performed on Ninkasi Brewery’s patio to an excited Eugene crowd. Check them out after you check out the photos below.

El Guitarrista. Image by Landahlauts.

Last night Dan and I were treated to a live Sonic Youth concert on La 2. I doubt I will ever get to see them live, so it was pretty cool. I miss being able to go to shows and take photos…. Damn you economy! Anyhow, I realized that while I may be unable to post photos of my own (no, no word on the computer yet), I can still tell you about life here in Spain! And what aspect is more ever-present than music?

Remember how, a little while ago, I came up with this quote from John Hooper’s The New Spaniards:

“It is in the field of pop and rock that Spain lags. During nearly two decades of association with the country, I doubt if I have heard more than a half-a-dozen numbers I would want to listen to again, and hundreds – no, thousands – I would pay good money not to.”

Well, it’s still true. (Keeping in mind that I’m a music snob.) But since I’ve been here, I’m willing to say that there is actually some popular Spanish music that doesn’t grate on the ears quite so much.

Hello again!

It has been quite a while since I last was able to post, but this time I am writing directly from the comfort of my apartment. We were finally able to get internet at home a few weeks ago. We had some trouble getting the Telefonica guy to show up – he kept missing us – but now we have ADSL (the “A”, by the way, stands for “Asymmetrical”, because the download speed is faster than the upload speed). I can’t tell you how awesome it really is to be reconnected to the world. You don’t know how much you acutally NEED to do on the internet until you have only an hour every couple of weekdays and start making To-Do lists that don’t get finished in that brief window…

Happy New Year!

I know I’ve not been the most up-to-date with this website. That happens during the holidays. Have no fear, though… I’m working on some photos to post right now and have a few other things brewing. Keep an eye out.

In the meantime, here’s something awesome you may want to check out. Fiction Family is the new project from Jon Foreman and Sean Watkins (formerly of Nickel Creek). They’ve got an album coming out towards the end of the month and are going out on tour right now. Here’s the video of their first single. Enjoy!

It’s that time of year again! Everyone is coming out with their Top Ten lists – why should I be any different?

Actually, I can think of a few reasons. For one thing, there are a lot of Top Ten lists out there, with more no doubt coming in the next few weeks. One more list, it could be argued, may only dilute their meaning and add to the general cacophony (yes, I said cacophony). You may disagree with me, but I think it’s actually kind of interesting to see how various sources rank the music. It gives you a better idea of who to trust, and there are usually a few albums that are good across the board that might actually be worth checking out.

Secondly, I have trouble making lists. Seriously. The last time I made a Top Ten Albums of the Year list must have been… three years ago. Sometimes I don’t have enough albums in the year to make a list of ten. Sometimes I have too many. Sometimes I just don’t feel like they ought to be on the same list. More importantly, my top albums of the year usually aren’t all from that particular year. This year wasn’t any different (I won’t say much except that, yes, it took me this long to listen to Elvis Costello), but there were enough new ones to make a list.

Finally…. am I a reliable news source? Hmm… That’s a scary thought. Answer that one how you may. I just figured that all of you reading this might be interested in what I actually listen to, not just what shows I can get a camera into.

Bottom line is this: It’s my blog and I’ll post what I want to. When you’re done with mine, I invite you to post your own in the comments.

The list begins below the fold:

It’s recently come to my attention that there are people who still don’t know about these yet, so I’m going to take a break from the regular schedule of photography and use this as a sort of PSA for the Take Away Shows. There’s this guy in France, see, who goes by the name of Vincent Moon and likes to make short films of bands he likes performing acoustically in unconventional spaces. He got Vampire Weekend on the street and in bars. Jose Gonzalez played in the back of a moving truck. Sufjan Stevens performed for him on the top of what looks like a church. Efterklang – yes, all of them – played a few songs in a stairwell. Recently, he even surprised Bloc Party at a bar and convinced them to sing a few songs in the street.

Although infrequently updated, the music there is very, very (tre, tre?) cool and never quite what you’d expect. You may even find something that you like and never heard about before. Head over there and check it out.

In the meantime, here’s a recent one from Fleet Foxes.
