At the end of the day, as the sun was setting, Fetival-goers were left with the choice of two big bands: Broken Social Scene, or my choice, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks. When I told my friends that was who I wanted to go see, most of them looked at me like I was crazy. They had no idea who he was or why I would pick someone they didn’t recognize over Broken Social Scene. So let me educate those readers who don’t know: Stephen Malkmus is not only one of the best lyricists out there, he is also one of the most influential indie rock musicians out there. Perhaps you’ve heard of a little band called Pavement? Yeah, he and Spiral Stairs (now of Preston School of Industry) made that band.

Jaguar Love @ Siren Festival 2008

If you met me today, or only knew my musical taste from this website, then you would probably be surprised to know that I used to LOVE hardcore back in high school. Trust me, it’s true, even if I was only ever on the fringes of all that. As time went on, I learned that the things that really got me were great lyrics and a good tune. I’d always liked the more melodic hardcore anyway. The search for great lyrics led me away from hardcore and into indie, and now the closest I really get to that (other than the occasional old favorite) is what you might call post-hardcore, screamo, whatever – bands like Thursday or Refused.

You should also know that I really don’t like using genres.

All this is a really long way to go about saying that when I learned that Jaguar Love, a band with two of the former members of the Blood Brothers and one from Pretty Girls Make Graves, all I could think was, “I’m there!”

Islands @ Siren Festival 2008

I mentioned in my last post that many of the bands I see at Siren Festival become my new favorites. Well, here’s one of them. Islands is from Montreal and at least two of its members were a part of the Unicorns. They’re a little strange, but man are they fun. Siren Festival 2008!

On July 19, most of the music-loving population of the New York City Metropolitan area descended on Coney Island for some fun in the sun: Siren Festival 2008. Each year for the past eight years, the Village Voice newspaper has thrown this all-day party in Coney Island. For free.

Yes, just one of many reasons why I love New York City in the summertime.
