At the beginning of December, a few friends and I took a trip to Seville, the capital of Andalucía and the fourth-largest city in Spain. It is also what you might consider the “soul” of Spain, as a lot of the typical Spanish traditions were either born there or practiced most fiercely there. Unlike Madrid or Barcelona, which are large, global cities, or even Málaga, which is a tiny wedge of Britain on Spain’s southern coast, Seville has a very particular and unforgettable identity. Not to say the others don’t have their own, but Seville is romantic Spain at its finest, and you can’t help but notice the details.

Anytime I feel like traveling out of Spain, I have to get to one of the major airports. There are really only three in the whole country, and I’m sort of midway between two of them – Madrid and Málaga. Oftentimes, it’s easier for me to go south to Málaga, mostly because there is a bus that runs directly there from Martos every morning. So I’ve been there a few times. It seems like a decent enough town, once you get over the fact that the whole province has been swamped by British tourists (seriously, I saw a Mark’s & Spencer’s ad there).

Because I’m usually on my way somewhere else, I haven’t spent too much time exploring, but here are a few shots from the little bit I have done.

This will be the last post relating to my Christmas adventures. Promise.

When I last left you, I was in Bruges. But it was Brussels, the so-called “Capital of Europe,” that I got to first and where I ended my trip to the Low Countries. Like Bruges, the city is charming, but it’s a much larger city. It is both the Capital of Belgium, where the King has his Palace, and home to the European Parliament, where much of the EU’s work gets done. Grand Place, the main square shown above, is a World Heritage site – yet another one I stumbled upon during this trip – and a great example of the way the old parts of the city look. But it’s such a hodge-podge of old and new and generally weird that I feel like it’s impossible to pin the city down. Maybe I just have to live there to get it. Anyway, enjoy the photos!

Here’s some more from the Christmas-New Year’s Holiday trip. Leaving Holland, I worked my way south to Belgium. I started in Brussels, but took a side trip to see the town of Bruges – a much cooler city, in my opinion. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t inspired by a certain movie to visit. After all… “It’s a fairytale town, isn’t it? How’s a fairytale town not somebody’s fucking thing?” I was pleasantly surprised by how large the city was and how much there was to see and do, even though a lot was closed for a random holiday I couldn’t figure out. I kind of wanted a couple extra days there. More photos below the fold.

The first stop on my 20-day journey after my friends left me in Málaga was the town of Ronda, in the same province but about 100 km (62 mi) northwest. This ancient town is built on either side of a deep gorge named “El Tajo.” On one side lies the ancient Arab portion of the town, and on the other is the new, Spanish quarter. The center is dominated the Puente Nuevo, completed in 1793 and rising to 120 meters (394 ft) above the river below.

I had hoped to be posting some pictures of my holiday trip right about now, but, well, read my last post… Instead, I will bring you some photos of Martos I had waiting to be posted. It’s an apt subject, actually, because I’m tired of traveling and it’s nice to be home. (Ok, maybe it’s only temporary, but I really do like it here and I try to follow the motto of “Live where you are.”)

Dominating the skyline of the town, and indeed the nearby countryside, is a mountain named La Peña, which reaches 1,003 meters (about 3,290 feet) in height – and does so rather suddenly, as you can see. At the top are the remains of a Nasrid castle, and you can hike up and visit them. I’ve been up twice since we’ve moved here, and it is well worth the trip.
