At the end of the day, just as we were getting ready to leave, we took one more walk along 3rd Avenue and came across a large crowd in the Wine Garden ooohing and aaahing at some kind of flashing lights in front of a jazz band. So we decided to give it a shot. We found a group of fire dancers performing and worked our way to a front. I had a lot of fun taking these photos, especially the really long exposure shots. The band was great as well, especially that awesome Radiohead cover they performed. Unfortunately, I didn’t catch the names of either the band or the fire dancing group.

Pictures, as usual, below the fold.

A lot of friends have asked me what it’s like living in Oregon since I moved here a year ago. Honestly, I find it kind of hard to describe the culture shock I’ve had to deal with moving to Eugene. This city is small – next to Martos, it’s the smallest town I’ve ever lived in – but, despite the glaringly obvious (and, frankly, disturbing) lack of racial diversity, there is a surprisingly wide array of things to do and see. People here intrigue me, because Oregon is such a place of contradictions – on the one hand you have the hipsters of Portland and the hippies who never left (as well as many people who want to be hippies), and on the other you have gun-toting conservative christian TEA Party members; you have huge trees and tons of rain, yet you turn the corner to find the dunes or cross a mountain range to find barren desert; you’ve got peace activists and bike riders and angry pickup drivers; you’ve got drunk football fans and people who don’t know the first thing about the game… and I’ve only just scratched the surface.

Like I said… Intriguing.

In December I moved out to a neighborhood called the Whiteaker that I like a lot, partly to get away from the “blast radius” around campus and partly to be closer to some friends from architecture. Named for the first governor of the state of Oregon, John Whiteaker, it is home to some of the more eclectic, artistic, and liberal people living in Eugene, an appropriate karmic reversal to that politician’s outspoken pro-slavery stance. If you were to visit, I could point you in the direction of at least three communes, a park full of junkies across from a dive bar, some of the coolest late night spots in town, a hostel that hosts art shows, and some of the best taquerias in town, just to name a few of the things keeping my neighborhood interesting.

As a celebration of the neighborhood’s character, each year they hold the Whiteaker Block Party, with street vendors, food, drinks, live music, and general good vibes free for all. Especially compared to the Eugene Celebration (an annual overpriced snooze-fest), it is a vibrant and lively day-long summer festival.

Here are some photos. And stay tuned for more from Adventure Galley’s performance at the Ninkasi Brewery and night-time fire dancing.

It’s Spring Break! Thank God! I’ve been working to update my portfolio so I can start the hunt for a summer job. So I’ve been going through a bunch of photos of models I took over the last two terms, thinking about including them. This is, by far, my favorite: a close-up of the laser cut 1/16″ breakdancers on the corner across the street from my project. If you don’t make school fun for yourself, then what’s the point?

A little over a month ago I mentioned that I was in architecture school… I told you it was going to be busy!

First, the good news: I got my kit lens back in fully working order. Hurrah! As much as I love my nifty fifty, it’s nice to not be limited to the one lens.

They’ve been keeping me busy in school for sure, but I’ve had the chance to have some fun at least. I don’t have a car, but my friends have ‘em, and we’ve used them to get out of town a few times. The most interesting place we went was to the coast, which is like nowhere I’ve ever seen. From Eugene, you drive through the mountains and along the river, through a beautiful forest. Once you reach the coast you drive through more forest, turn a corner and then suddenly you’re confronted with huge sand dunes. Crazy! Sand dunes in the middle of the forest. I’m told you can actually get lost in them if you don’t stay on the path.

Anyway, here are a few pictures from summer (yes, summer) trips to the beach and going camping.

I really just wanted to post something about where I am and what I’m doing these days, which will hopefully explain the randomness of updates. But how could I leave you without photos? Since I’m feeling a little nostalgic, I’ve decided to include a few parting shots of Martos as well.

I left Spain in June to pursue a Masters of Architecture at the University of Oregon, a three-and-a-half-year program at their campus in Eugene, Oregon. The program started in summer and, so far, has been incredibly intense – more intense than I expected it to be. Although I only pulled one all-nighter (hopefully the last), 8AM to 2AM days have not been uncommon. Needless to say, it’s been busy. You may see some of my work showing up on the site (due to popular demand), but I promise it will be rare, if only because this is mainly for photography.

I’m on break now, and I had a great trip back to New York City to see my friends and pick up stuff that had been in storage. In the last year, I have been in seven countries, five states, and Lord knows how many cities and provinces within that. Now I want nothing more than to settle for a while and lay off the traveling.

A lot of what I have been doing on my break is sorting life out and going through the stuff I haven’t seen for a year. After the recent death of my desktop computer (the second Dell to die on me in a year), I have managed to salvage the data from those hard drives, and you’ll see some concert photos that have been languishing on my desktop for quite some time. With luck, I’ll start hitting up some shows here in Eugene, and you’ll see some newer ones too.

Don’t expect too much new photography for a while, though. My kit lens kicked the bucket and is in for repair. So it’s just sorting photos right now. Which leads me to… Martos!

At the beginning of December, a few friends and I took a trip to Seville, the capital of Andalucía and the fourth-largest city in Spain. It is also what you might consider the “soul” of Spain, as a lot of the typical Spanish traditions were either born there or practiced most fiercely there. Unlike Madrid or Barcelona, which are large, global cities, or even Málaga, which is a tiny wedge of Britain on Spain’s southern coast, Seville has a very particular and unforgettable identity. Not to say the others don’t have their own, but Seville is romantic Spain at its finest, and you can’t help but notice the details.
