At the beginning of December, a few friends and I took a trip to Seville, the capital of Andalucía and the fourth-largest city in Spain. It is also what you might consider the “soul” of Spain, as a lot of the typical Spanish traditions were either born there or practiced most fiercely there. Unlike Madrid or Barcelona, which are large, global cities, or even Málaga, which is a tiny wedge of Britain on Spain’s southern coast, Seville has a very particular and unforgettable identity. Not to say the others don’t have their own, but Seville is romantic Spain at its finest, and you can’t help but notice the details.

The New York Times Photography Department decided to do something pretty awesome recently, which they are calling “A Moment in Time.” The idea was that photographers around the world would take a picture at the same moment – 1500 UTC on Sunday, May 2, 2010, to be exact – to create a collage of life around the world. You can read more about it and see some of the first picks here.

My offering (above) is from inside a pub near Stamford Bridge in London, where I was watching Chelsea take down Liverpool. Let me tell you… it was tough taking out my camera in the middle of that. It seems that in the priority ranking of my life, football comes before photography. Who’d have thought?

EDIT (10 May ’10 20:17): The Times has posted the results of their grand experiment. I highly recommend it. You can find my photo here, or you can start from the beginning here.

There haven’t been a lot of updates here, because I have been both incredibly busy (deciding where to study for the next three years, preparing a presentation for the kids on Canada, etc.) and incredibly lazy. Yes, it is possible to be both. But there was one thing that I wanted to share: I was in the newspaper!

Ok, well, my friend Becky was in the newspaper. But the Yuma Sun article about her travels in Spain was accompanied by one of my photos from jumping in Seville. Exciting, no? Check out the article!

Just got back from a week-long road trip across the north of Spain with Dietrich, from Barcelona to Santiago de Compostela. Good times! We got back to Martos just in time to see the Easter procession. Plenty more photos where that came from… on my computer desktop. (Gimme a break, I’m relaxing today!) This song has been going through my head all day. Happy Easter, everyone!

Christ, the Lord, is risen today, Alleluia!
Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia!
Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!
Sing, ye heavens, and earth, reply, Alleluia!

Love’s redeeming work is done, Alleluia!
Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia!
Lo! the Sun’s eclipse is over, Alleluia!
Lo! He sets in blood no more, Alleluia!

Vain the stone, the watch, the seal, Alleluia!
Christ hath burst the gates of hell, Alleluia!
Death in vain forbids His rise, Alleluia!
Christ hath opened paradise, Alleluia!

Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia!
Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia!
Once He died our souls to save, Alleluia!
Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia!

Soar we now where Christ hath led, Alleluia!
Following our exalted Head, Alleluia!
Made like Him, like Him we rise, Alleluia!
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies, Alleluia!

Hail, the Lord of earth and heaven, Alleluia!
Praise to Thee by both be given, Alleluia!
Thee we greet triumphant now, Alleluia!
Hail, the resurrection day, Alleluia!

King of glory, Soul of bliss, Alleluia!
Everlasting life is this, Alleluia!
Thee to know, Thy power to prove, Alleluia!
Thus to sing and thus to love, Alleluia!

Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia!
Unto Christ, our heavenly King, Alleluia!
Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia!
Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia!

But the pains that He endured, Alleluia!
Our salvation have procured, Alleluia!
Now above the sky He’s King, Alleluia!
Where the angels ever sing. Alleluia!

Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia!
Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia!
Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia!
Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia!

- Charles Wesley (1707 – 1788)

On January 28th, schools across Spain celebrated Día de la Paz, or Peace Day. Perhaps its closest comparison in the United States is Martin Luther King Day, which occurs around the same time. Children focus on messages of anti-violence and anti-racism and celebrate with performances, readings, and a flotilla of white balloons. My school, CEPR Hermanos Carvajales, was no different. We were blessed with a sunny day for the celebrations and the whole school went out to the patio to enjoy them together. Some students read stories and poems. The first-graders danced to Michael Jackson’s “Black or White,” and then everyone sang and danced to his “Heal the World.” Here are some photos – and yes, these are my students. =)

This is a HUGE festival here… It runs for a little over a week, all day and all night. Buses from all over the province stop at the fairground itself, which is just acres and acres of games, rides, food, and dance clubs. We went out on Saturday, saw the parade and then went out with some auxiliares. I didn’t get home until around 4am and everything was still going strong when we left.

That’s just how they do.

I’m not entirely clear on the history of the festival, but the parade was all about the history of Jaén. It started with some Romans, who were followed by the Muslims, who were followed by the Spanish, then Napoleon, and then, apparently, large balloon animals like the catoctopus, billowing things that shoot confetti, and an army of smurfs. At the end of the parade come Saint Lucas himself on horseback in battle with the Lagarto, a dragon that apparently terrorized Jaén in the middle ages and whose skin supposedly hangs in one of the churches.

Anyway, check out the pictures. It was awesome.
