Here are a few shots that I discovered this week had never made it up, to my shame. You are looking at No Age, a self-described experimental powerpop punk band from Los Angeles, performing at the South Street Seaport this July. If you listen to the stuff on their MySpace page, you will find a band that is a lot more experimental than you will find if you go to see them perform live tonight. Maybe it was just the night, but when they played this show, I was surprised to hear some pretty straightforward punk – loud, lots of distortion, and really short, energetic songs.

As you can see, the band has just two members, guitarist/voacalist Randy Randall and drummer/vocalist Dean Spunt.

This being South Street Seaport, the place was crawling with tourists. A reasonable-sized crowd came specifically to see the band, but there was no deliniation between the crowd and passer-by. In fact, if you look carefully in some of those pictures above, you’ll notice that the balconies of the mall in the back are lined with people watching the show. I’m not sure what I think of it as a venue, but it was a nice night out and it was a relief to not have to deal with a crowd packed like sardines.

If you’ve got tickets to see them play tonight with Titus Andronicus, I salute you! Don’t expect the most profoundly mind-blowing experience, but you should be prepared for a real good time and maybe some moshing. It’s worth it.
